Welcome Sarah Ballance and Run To You!

The experience with the All Romantic Suspense Blog Tour has taught me so many things. More important, it has brought me in contact with writers whom I would never have met—and the stories they create. This morning we are pleased to welcome Sarah Ballance, creator of Run To You to Veronica's Tales.

First, a bit about Run To You:
Mattie James can't pinpoint exactly when she lost control of her life, but the moment she decided to take it back made the front page of the local paper. Desperate to dodge the fallout— and the tabloids—she jumps at the chance to spend an off-season week in a tiny resort community by the sea. Making the trip with her ex-lover is a complication she can live with; coming face to face with a dead woman is not.

The last thing Sheriff Wyatt Reed expected to find on the storm-ravaged beach was a beautiful blonde with a jealous sidekick, but one look at Mattie left him wanting more. Their first date takes an ominous turn when he gets the call that a woman was found murdered. With a killer on the loose and a troubling lack of suspects or motive, Wyatt has to put his feelings aside to focus on the case. But his vow not to become personally involved is shattered when he discovers Mattie's life is on the line, and this time the truth leaves her with a deadly choice . . . and nowhere to run.

If that doesn't spark your interest, I don't know what will!!
Let's talk with Mattie James, herself . . .

What is Run To You about?
A vacation gone awry. After a public breakup with my "prominent" ex-fiancĂ© made the news, my best friend – who happens to be my ex-lover – whisked me away to the beach to get away from it all. He had high hopes we'd get together again, or at least have sex. That was so not happening, but I don't think he believed me until I met Wyatt Reed. Our first date was interrupted by the first of two murders, and things got intense from there.

What did you think the first time you saw Wyatt?
In a word, YUM.

What was your second thought?
He just looked … real. There was something rugged and raw about Wyatt, and all I could think about was how those rough hands would feel on my skin. That, and that trace of a five o'clock shadow. I won't tell you where I imagined that!

Did you think it was love at first sight?
The connection was there, yes. Until Wyatt, my love life has consisted of one dating disaster after another so I didn't want to trust that instinct, but it was there.

What do you like most about him?
He is who he is. You always know exactly where you stand with him, and he doesn't try to make anything what it's not. After growing up in an affluent world where appearances mean everything, it's incredible to know a man who doesn't try to be more than he is … although I've gotta say, I couldn't ask for more than the man he is.

How would you describe him?
Easy going and exceptionally good with his hands. He's also got the sexiest gray eyes you've ever seen.

How would he describe you?
I shudder to think! LOL. I'm carefree and impulsive. I'm as wild as Wyatt is laid back – we balance each other well.

What made you choose writing as a profession?
There's not a whole lot to do on the island where I live with Wyatt, but there's inspiration to be had everywhere I look. The locals are colorful to say the least, and between their stories and the butterflies I still feel when I think of Wyatt, writing is a natural choice.

What is your biggest fear?
The ocean. I was terrified of it before I saw it through Wyatt's eyes, and, while we've since made strides towards cohabitating, the deep water still scares me.

How do you relax?
The sun, the sand, and the sound of the waves. Need I say more?

What is the best piece of advice you ever received?

When I decided to move to be with Wyatt, my mother had a fit. But my father looked at me said anything I believed in was good enough for him, and that I should always follow my heart. Coming from him, the sentiment was especially poignant because it was the first time I had permission to be me instead of who they wanted me to be.

Now, let's get to know a little something about Sarah, the author.
What books or movies have had an impact on your writing?

Any time I read a great book, it inspires me. I can lose myself in the story and at the same time appreciate the craft behind it. Everything from the nuts and bolts to the story arc to every twist, turn, and cliff hanger makes me want to write a book. I love that!

Welcome Leanne Dyck

As part of the All Romantic Suspense Blog Tour, Veronica’s Tales is pleased to welcome author Leanne Dyck and Jaron Cardew, hero of The Sweater Curse.

What is The Sweater Curse about?
Aspiring knitwear designer Gwen Bjarnson is stuck in Purgatory. To escape, she must re-examine her life, journey through her past and right a wrong.
But which wrong?
Young and in love, she works to establish her career, except fate has different plans. One rash act and she loses everything. Never resting, always seeking, and yearning for what she can no longer have, Gwen faces the truth: if she remains, others are destined to die.
How will she solve the mystery before it is too late?

Leanne kindly provided with an excerpt for this intriguing book:
This isn’t Heaven. It isn’t Hell. And I’m not alive.
Picture this: a bus stop, tons of people packed into the same small space all waiting to continue their journey. Many buses stop here. Some passengers get off, others get on. Young children with sickly white complexions huddle together in the shelter. Teenagers with rope burns around their necks get off the bus. Old men with bullet holes climb on.
Throughout this confusion, the only constant is me. I remain alone.
Why?
I don’t know, but I must find the reason. I must examine my life to discover the momentary lapse. The wrong I’ve committed. The task I’ve neglected. It’s my only means of escape.

And now . . .

Hello. My name is Jaron Cardew and I’m pleased to be here today.

What did you think the first time you saw Gwen? I was impressed by her intellect and by her obvious talent as a designer.

What was your second thought? She was an attractive woman and I’m a man—need I say more (grins)

Did you think it was love at first sight? Love at first sight? Yes, I think so.

What do you miss most about Gwen? Everything. How she looked that night we meet. Her devotion to her craft. Her voice, her touch, her scent—her.

How would you describe her? She was a captivating personality, an astonishing intellect housed in a beautiful body. But, that body—how ever beautiful—was just a shell. It wasn’t her. She’s still here, with me. She’s in the chill of the first spring day, in a single raindrop, and in the scent of a rose.

How would she describe you? I like to think she would describe me as her friend, her confidant, her lover.

What made you choose writing as a profession? Writing is part of me—something I have to do like breathing.

What is your biggest fear? My biggest fear… It’s already happened… Losing Gwen.

How do you relax? I begin each day with an hour of meditation. It not only relaxes me, but also restores my energy and centers me. Or, at least, it did, before…

What is the best piece of advice you’d like to share? Treasure your loved ones and keep them safe. Let them know how much you love them every single day.

For Leanne: What books or movies have had an impact on your writing?
Steven Kings On Writing and Nancy Lamb’s The Art and Craft of Storytelling have helped me develop my writing skills.

Welcome Rhonda Lee Carver

We are so pleased that author Rhonda Lee Carver could be with us today--Valentine’s Day—and share a bit of romance with us. Take it away, Rhonda . . .

Valentine's Day is all about romance. But now the day has come and you're left tapping your chin and wondering, “I forgot all about it. What do I do now?”

Here are last minute date tips. No matter how long you’ve been dating, or how intimate your relationship is, they should love one of these ideas.
  1. Cook dinner for her. If you know her fave meal, make it. Don’t forget the candlelight and soft music. Maybe even decorate the place like a country she has wanted to visit.
  2. Make up gift cards with special treats and ideas. For instance, a back massage, foot massage, and a day where she gets to choose what you’ll do together…Be creative. The sky is your limit.
  3. Rent her fave romantic movie, pick up a bottle of champagne or wine, grab a nice bouquet of pretty flowers and surprise her.
  4. If you don’t mind the cold, for those who live in a cold climate, spend the day at the zoo. The great thing about winter time is, you won’t have to endure the crowds and you’ll have privacy to tuck away in the corner and steal a kiss.
  5. A tour at a chocolate factory. What woman doesn’t love chocolate? And if she is one of the few that never touches the stuff, then take her to a winery for a tour and sampling. After, stop off at a nice bakery shop and share a variety of desserts and a specialty coffee.

Valentine’s Day isn’t about how much money you spend, but instead how special you make it for that certain someone. Even last minute dates can be made to feel like they’d been planned for weeks.

It's clear Rhonda knows what she's talking about. No further proof is needed than in an excerpt from her latest book—Second Chance Cowboy. Take a look:

Carly squeezed her hands into fists. “My poor husband. How difficult it is for him to manage his inflated ego and keep his zipper closed.”
“We’re divorced, remember?” His voice reeked of sarcasm.
She groaned in irritation. Her pulse pounded in her ears like the beating of a drum. Her claws were showing.
Chance didn’t blink an eye as he gazed at her across the room. “Honey, I can keep my pants zipped just fine. Problem is, you can’t keep your fingers off my zipper.”
Carly’s palm itched to slap him. “We live in a small town, Chance. How do you think it’s possible we haven’t run into each other more than three times in the last two years?” She cocked her chin. “Let me fill you in. I’ve done everything in my power to keep from bumping into you. Do you realize how difficult it is to plan my schedule weeks in advance so I don’t have to see you? Is that a description of a woman who can’t keep her fingers off your zipper?”
“No, more like a woman who’s afraid she’ll forget what screwed up our marriage in the first place, realize she’s made a huge mistake and get her ass back home.”
“Humph, fat chance that’ll ever happen.” She fumbled with the sheet in irritation and gave her hair a toss over one shoulder. Damn, he did have a point, although she’d never admit it to him.
“Yeah, right, Carly, because you can’t ever forgive and forget, can you? You think you’re the only one who has lost, don’t you?” His eyes became steely pools of green. His voice turned low and controlled. “I lost Devon, too. He was my son--our son. How long are you going to keep blaming me for his death?”
Carly swallowed the painful lump in her constricted throat. “I don’t blame you.”
       “Could have fooled me.”
“We both know why I left.”
“We do?” His bitter laugh split the air with its razor-sharp intensity. “I know you want to hold on to the belief that I am the bad guy who drove you away, but isn’t it time you took half the responsibility for the failure of our marriage?” A trace of compassion softened his expression. He tugged on his shirt and finger-combed his hair.
“It wasn’t my fault you cheated.” Once she said it, she wanted to yank the words back. Too late, just like their relationship.
“You’re a broken record, sweetheart. It’s not worth denying the accusation any longer. Maybe eventually you’ll believe your words and feel justified in leaving.  Devon died, Carly. He’s gone and we can’t change the truth. One of us needed to make the decision to let him go and I made it. I held out hope you’d eventually find a sliver of forgiveness in your cold heart. I guess I was wrong.”
The old wound broke open and her lungs emptied of oxygen. She wanted to lash out at him, tell him to go to hell, but the words didn’t come. Instead, she whispered, “I’m going to the bathroom. When I get back I want you gone.”
“Carly, you’ve become an expert at sucking all the joy out of your life and pushing away anyone who reaches out to you. You’re living in a self-made prison, founded on guilt and pain, and there is no key to unlock the cell door.”

Welcome Bri Clark

This morning we are delighted to welcome author Bri Clark to Veronica's Tales.

First, let's learn a little about Bri herself . . .
Bri Clark is a real example of redemption and renewal.  Growing penniless in the South, she learned street smarts while caring for her brother in a broken home.  Bri watched her mother work several jobs to care for their small family.  Once her brother could fend for himself, she moved on to a series of bad choices including leaving school and living on her own.   Rebelliousness was a strong understatement to describe those formative years.
As a teenager, her wake up call came from a fight with brass knuckles and a judge who gave her a choice of shaping up or spending time in jail.  Bri took that opportunity and found a way to moved up from the streets―and ended up co-owning an extremely successful construction business.  She lived the high life until the real estate crash when she lost everything.  She moved west and found herself living with her husband and 4 kids in a 900 square foot apartment.
Bri now fills her time, writing, blogging, leading a group of frugal shoppers and sharing her southern culture.  Her unique background gives her writing a raw sensibility.  She understands what it takes to overcome life’s obstacles.   She often tells friends, “I can do poor.  I’m good at poor. It’s prosperity that I’m not used to.”  Bri and her husband Chris live in Boise.  Bri is known as the Belle of Boise for her true southern accent, bold demeanor and hospitable nature.
The best way to follow that up is with a bit about Bri's latest story The Familial Witch

Lucien Lemione the clan leader of the feared and revered Eternals is faced with the ultimate betrayal. His second in command for two centuries has not only created the most grievous of offenses but also commissioned the creation of liquid silver. When poisoned by this toxin, an immortal suffers a fate much worse than death, frozen in an internal prison. After being wounded when found spying, he hides deep within the eerie woods that encircle the Triad Mountains. Desperate and in pain, he prays to an offended mother goddess for help. Her answer: a woman, but not just any woman. A witch.

After losing her entire coven at the hands of the Eternals, Aisleen is the last of her kind. She retreats from the world to Trinity Forest where she is giving the opportunity of a lifetime, or perhaps a test of principles. It’s there she discovers the man she heals is the Eternal that wiped out her people. Although she is bound as a healer, she could be creative in her revenge. Aisleen knows who and what Lucien is…but does not speak of it. There can be no future with Lucien for she can only be with a mortal man. Even if she wanted to be with him, can she forgive the man that caused the genocide of her people?

Lucien must act quickly for the survival of his clan is at stake. However, Aisleen’s ethereal beauty and emerald eyes keep pushing those thoughts far from his mind. Determined to find out what secret she hides, he prolongs his time with her. When his people need him most what will he choose…duty, desire, or will he make his own fate?

You can choose love but you can’t choose destiny.

I know after reading the blurb I wanted to meet Lucien up close and personal, so take it away Lucien . . .

Where are you from? I am from a realm known as the Dream Realm.

What is Familial Witch about? It’s about my journey of trying to protect my people from the traitor Alistair and in the process I met Aisleen. She saved me.

What did you think the first time you saw Aisleen? That she looked like and angel on earth.

What was your second thought? If she was I did not want to go back to the Dream Realm.

Did you think it was love at first sight? Perhaps…

What do you like most about her? That she is so much more than what she seems.

How would you describe her? She is beautiful in a way that I have never known. The genuine kindness and love she has for all is something I can’t comprehend…but I’m trying.

How would she describe you? As a rake…moody. I don’t know. I don’t speak for her.

What is your biggest fear? That I won’t be able to be everything she needs and my people need at the same time.

How do you relax? I listen to Aisleen hum.

What is the best piece of advice you ever received? It was from Aisleen…She told me to quit looking for something that’s not meant to be found once. It’s has applied to several situations in my life since then.

Wow! A man who relaxes by listening to his woman hum.
Sounds like a keeper to me!

Bri and Lucien, thank you so much for visiting Veronica's Tales today.
